This is a perfect example of one of the Gestalt Laws of Perception: Figure Ground or the Law of Prägnanz. 

"Human brain tends to interpret ambiguous or complex images as simple and complete. In an image the composing elements are perceived as either figures or ground. Background and foreground can be exchanged and in both case they assume a precise meaning."
